10:35am | It was a memorable day at the Adelaide Oval yesterday for so many reasons, not least of which, a magnificent hundred from David Warner, but there’s a bigger story here this morning, and that is that Michael Clarke has returned to the ground, and to the nets, in a bid to return to the centre, and resume his innings… he left the ground, retired hurt with a back injury when he was on 60* yesterday.
Australia finished on 6/354, after India got a few cheap wickets with the new ball in the last 10 overs of play.
Hello again from the Adelaide Oval, where we unfortunately have RAIN to commence the second day of this 1st Commonwealth Bank Test Match between Australia and India.
The rain that I mentioned was forecast, and we’re not expecting it to stick around for too long, and hopefully will have play at 11am AEDST, if not, very soon after.
Brad Haddin was dismissed with the final delivery of play yesterday, so when we do resume, Steven Smith will have a new partner in the centre.
10:43am | The rain is relenting here… which is good news, but the covers remain on.
10:56am | Play will commence at 11:10am AEDST… So we’ve only lost 10 minutes as a result of that passing shower!
11:10am | Hello again from the Adelaide Oval, where we’re ready for the start of play on the second day of the first test.
Australia resume at 6/354… Brad Haddin was dismissed on the last ball of play last night, so Shami has 4 balls left in this over, and he’ll bowl them to MICHAEL CLARKE, who’s returning to the middle to resume his Innings. Steven Smith will join him.
The lights are on, there’s a lot of cloud cover, but we’re ready to go, and waiting for us upstairs in the Commentary Box are James Brayshaw, Mark Taylor and Ian Healy!
11:40am | Australia 6/388 (96) | Michael Clarke 79* (103) | Steven Smith 87* (151)
We’ve seen 6.4 overs this morning, and it’s been all Australia… 34 runs have been added at a cracking pace, and Captain Courageous is being just that… there’ll be one hell of a outpouring of emotion if he can get 21 more runs.
Continuing in the commentary box for you are Brett Lee, Shane Warne and Michael Slater!
12:07pm | RAIN HAS STOPPED PLAY!
Australia | 6/405 (101.4) | Steven Smith 98* (171) | Michael Clarke 85* (117)
We have rain again at the Adelaide Oval… it had been drizzling for the last few minutes, but it’s now heavy enough for the umpires to call the covers on, and after only have one rain interruption last summer during the Ashes, we’ve had two already in the 2nd day of the 1st Test between Australia and India…
Clarke and Smith have guided Australia past 400, and they’re both very close to 100, Smith agonizingly so, but we’ll continue play as soon as the rain clears, and as you know… we can play for an extra hour at the end of the day to make up for time lost here, so settle in… there’s plenty to come from the Adelaide Oval.
12:41pm | The news from Adelaide is that the covers are coming off, however, as we say that, they’re going on again, so LUNCH will be taken early… the Lunch break will be taken at 12:20pm Local Time (12:50pm AEDST), with play to recommence, if the weather permits, at 1:30pm AEDST
There’ll be an adjusted schedule for the remaining two session, no doubt. Once we have that, you’ll be informed.
For the moment… it’s an early lunch. Goodbye!
1:30pm AEDST | Hello again from the Adelaide Oval, where we nearly had good news… just as the players and umpires were making their way to the centre, the rain has started again, and we’re heading off the field once more.
Unfortunately, there’s a bit of rain on the way… it’s coming from the west, and we’ll be off the field for a while… We’ll go to the Commentary Box, where Ian Chappell, James Brayshaw and Mark Taylor can inform you of what’s happening.
1:55pm | Hello again from the Adelaide Oval, where we have good news… the covers are off, and Michael Clarke, Steven Smith and the Indians are making their way back out into the centre.
Clarke has 85, Smith has 98… they’re both so close to that 3-figure milestone, that if Clarke is successful in reaching, will be one of the more special moments in his career.
Let’s get stuck into it. Waiting for us in the Commentary Box, it’s good afternoon to James Brayshaw, Ian Chappell and Mark Taylor!
1:57pm | GOT IT… GOT IT… FIRST BALL AFTER THE BREAK, AND IT’S THE FIFTH TEST CENTURY IN THE CAREER OF STEVEN SMITH… A MAGNIFICENT MOMENT FOR A FINE YOUNG PLAYER, AND HE WALKS OVER TO THE NUMBER 408, WHICH IS PAINTED ON THE GROUND, HE POINTS THE BAT AT IT, AND THEN SALUTES THE SKY, AND ACKNOWLEDGES HIS MATE… WHAT A SPECIAL MOMENT THAT WAS!
2:05pm | Revised Playing Conditions (Local Time).
Second Session | 1:30pm-3:50pm
Tea | 3:50pm-4:10pm
Third Session | 4:10-7pm
2:06pm | RAIN HAS STOPPED PLAY (AGAIN).
Australia 6/423 (103.3) | Steven Smith 103* (177) | Michael Clarke 98* (122)
It’s the third time today that we’ve seen the covers put on the pitch at the Adelaide Oval, and it must be so frustrating for Michael Clarke, who is just two away from joining his mate Steven Smith in three figures… what a moment that will be.
We’ve got covers on here, the rain is heavier than earlier, so this won’t be a short delay.
We’ll have more from the Adelaide Oval as soon as we have good news!
3:49pm | Good news from the Adelaide Oval… Play will resume at 4pm AEDST!
Michael Clarke will resume on 98*… see you soon!
4pm | We’re about to resume play at the Adelaide Oval… Michael Clarke is at the non-strikers end on 98… Steven Smith has 103, and it’s Murali Vijay who has the ball in hand, as we go up to the Commentary Box, and say hi to Ian Chappell, Brett Lee and Ian Healy!
4:05pm | HE’S OFTEN BEEN THE SUBJECT OF MUCH CRITICISM SINCE TAKING OVER FROM RICKY PONTING AS AUSTRALIAN CAPTAIN, BUT MICHAEL CLARKE HAS LED FROM THE FRONT WHEN IT’S MATTERED MOST, AND THAT’S NEVER BEEN AS EVIDENT AS IT’S BEEN IN THE LAST 15 DAYS… AND THAT IS ONE OF, IF NOT, THE MOST RICHLY DESERVED CENTURY YOU’LL EVER SEE IN THE GAME OF CRICKET!
WELL PLAYED, MICHAEL CLARKE… GUTSY PERFORMANCE, IN TRYING CIRCUMSTANCES, AND CONDITIONS AT THE ADELAIDE OVAL!
You can see the relief on his face… it’s like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders… what a moment… it’s 6/426!
4:30pm | RAIN HAS STOPPED PLAY
Australia 6/473 (111) | Michael Clarke 109* (140) | Steven Smith 142* (204)
Yet again, we’re off-field here at the Adelaide Oval, as the rain falls once more… disappointing, because in the 45 balls we’ve seen in this session, Michael Clarke went to 100, Steven Smith has raced to 142, and the crowd were getting their moneys worth.
So, as has been the case a few times already today, the covers are on… we’ll keep you up-to-date as the evening progresses, and bring you LIVE play if and when we get it.
Goodbye for now!
5:20pm | Hello again from Adelaide, where we bring good news. The rain has stopped, and the ground staff and umpires are out in the centre now to see if we’re able to get anymore cricket in this evening, before the scheduled close of play.
Now, remember, we can play up until 7:30pm AEDST tonight IF players are on-field by 6pm AEDST, as that is the schedule close of play, but if they’re off-field at that time, STUMPS will be called!
Hopefully, we have some LIVE play for you soon. Stick with us, the second day isn’t done yet!
5:47pm | Play is back underway here in Adelaide… if the weather and light lets us, we’ll have 21 more overs tonight… which will take us through to around 7pm Local Time.
Clarke and Smith resume, and Shane Warne is in the Commentary Box with Mark Nicholas and Mark Taylor!
6pm | Australia are moving along nicely here. Now, because of the really late finish we’re expecting here in Adelaide, viewers in NSW, VIC, ACT, TAS, SA and QLD will see Nine News as soon as play finishes here in Adelaide!
6:20pm | GONE! A brilliant innings comes to an end, as Michael Clarke picks out the fielder, and the seventh wicket has fallen, as India finally get one on the second day!
Clarke | c Pujara b KV Sharma 128 (163) | FOW 7/517 (119.2)
6:25pm | BAD LIGHT HAS STOPPED PLAY.
6:30pm | STUMPS
Australia 7/517 (120) | Mitchell Johnson 0* (4) | Steven Smith 162* (231)
Well, that’s it… BAD LIGHT has stopped play, and that brings the second day to a close.
STUMPS have been called here in Adelaide, and it’s a very depressing scene for all who wanted to see more Cricket… and we haven’t seen a lot today… about 30 overs in fact, but in that time, India have only taken one wicket, and Australia have piled on 163 runs.
Now, as we’ve lost 60 overs today, we’ll start half an hour early tomorrow morning, and end half an hour later than scheduled.
That means play will start at 10:30am AEDST, and conclude at 6:30pm AEDST, with the extra half-hour to complete the overs there if needed, which will take us up to around 7pm AEDST.
So, three big days ahead of us, and thankfully, we have a much brighter weather forecast for Day 3.
Hope you enjoyed it… All markets bar QLD, NT and WA will now to go to Nine News… it was Michael Clarke’s Day at the Adelaide Oval… See you tomorrow!
