After an exhilarating five days in Adelaide, we’ve made our way to Brisbane for the 2nd Test in the Commonwealth Bank Series between Australia and India.
Australia have the advantage after a famous victory in Adelaide, but they come here with a new captain on the eve of Christmas for 2014.
Hello everyone. Welcome to the 2nd Test LIVE from the GABBA.
We’re a bit short for time… the anthem ceremony has already taken place, and we’re not far away from play.
The news immediately off the top, is that MS Dhoni has won the toss, and India will BAT first.
Steven Smith is the 45 Test Captain for Australia. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who is on debut, replace Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris, while Shaun Marsh is in for Michael Clarke.
India have made 3 changes as well, with M.S Dhoni coming in, so to Ashwin, and Yadav and Saha, Karn and Shami all sitting this one out.
So, very different looking line-ups from what we saw in Adelaide.
The players and umpires have made their way to the centre, so we’ll make our way to the Commentary Box, as Mitchell Johnson gets ready to tear in with the new ball, and we’ll say hi to Ian Chappell, Mark Taylor and Ian Healy!
11:30am | India 0/17 (6) | Murali Vijay 13* (23) | Shikhar Dhawan 4* (13)
Slow, steady start for India… going at just under three an over at the moment, but there’s still plenty of Cricket to be played.
Mitchell Starc is into the attack, and Mark Nicholas, Shane Warne and Michael Slater are moving into the Commentary position!
12pm | India 0/49 (12) | Murali Vijay 32* (42) | Shikhar Dhawan 17* (30)
India are starting to hit their stride at the GABBA. It’s their morning so far. They’re 0/49 after 12 at DRINKS on the first morning, as James Brayshaw, Ian Healy and Mark Taylor take over commentary!
12:13pm | GONE!!!
MITCHELL MARSH GETS THE BREAKTHROUGH FOR AUSTRALIA, AND DHAWAN HAS TO GO!
FIRST TEST MATCH WICKET FOR MITCHELL MARSH
Dhawan | c Haddin, b Marsh | 24 (39) | 1/56 (13.4)
Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man in!
1pm | LUNCH
India 1/89 (25) | Murali Vijay 46* (75) | Cheteshwar Pujara 15* (36)
It’s LUNCH on the first day at the GABBA, and India have started so very well… it’s 1/89 after only 25 overs. That run rate was above 4 an over earlier, but Australia have taped that back a little bit in the overs lead up to lunch.
Mitchell Marsh took the wicket of Dhawan just after drinks, and that was his first in Test Cricket.
So, an interesting morning here… it’s probably just in favour of India, but one wicket, and Australia will be back on level pegging.
More play for you at 1:40pm AEDST!
1:40pm | Hello again from the GABBA. it’s a very hot afternoon in Brisbane. This is the second session of Day 1 of the 2nd Test, and India have started well. Vijay is approaching 50, and Pujara is just settling in, as they get ready to resume, and waiting for us in the Commentary Box are Shane Warne, Mark Nicholas and Mark Taylor!
1:44pm | FIFTY for Murali Vijay… it’s come from just 79 balls. He’s made a solid start, but he’ll realise that this is a brilliant batting deck, and he has the potential to go on with this and make a big score.
2:20pm | GONE!!! HE SHOULDN’T BE, BUT HE CAN’T REVIEW… PUJARA STANDS THERE IN DISGUST, BUT THE UMPIRE HAS GIVEN HIM HIS MARCHING ORDER.
JOSH HAZLEWOOD HAS A WICKET, AND IT’S 2/100.
Pujara | c Haddin, b Hazlewood | 18 (64) | FOW 2/100 (33.3)
Murali Vijay is sitting pretty at the other end… he’s racked up his third 50 of the series, as we back to the Commentary Box, and say hi to Michael Slater, James Brayshaw and Ian Healy!
3:15pm | India 3/137 (44.2) | Murali Vijay 72* (136) | Ajinkya Rahane 0* (0)
BRILLIANT BOWLING FROM JOSH HAZLEWOOD, AND KOHLI HAS GOT TO GO!
Kohli | c Haddin, b Hazlewood | 19 (27) | FOW 3/137 (44.2)
Australia get a second for the session, and it is their session at the GABBA!
Taking over in Commentary, to take you through to TEA, are Mark Taylor, Ian Healy and Michael Slater!
3:40pm | TEA
India 3/151 (52) | Murali Vijay 73* (157) | Ajinkya Rahane 13* (25)
India have made it to tea without losing another wicket, on a compelling opening day of this second test match.
Australia got the better of that session. India only put on 52 runs in that session, and they lost 2 wickets in the process.
They need to finish today strong, and as long as Murali Vijay is there, it’s a possibility!
More from the GABBA in just a few moments!
4pm | We’re ready to go for the final session of play. India need to start making some runs, whereas Australia will be looking to maintain the momentum they have from that brilliant second session.
Waiting for us in the Commentary Box are James Brayshaw, Ryan Harris and Ian Healy!
4:25pm | HE CAME SO CLOSE IN ADELAIDE, BUT MURALI VIJAY FINALLY HAS A CENTURY!
4:35pm | India are moving along nicely in this final session… scoring freely, and to tell you more about it, Shane Warne and Mark Nicholas are with Mark Taylor!
4:50pm | DRINKS
5pm | India 3/223 (64) | Murali Vijay 127* (196) | Ajinkya Rahane 31* (58)
Apologies for the break in transmission… the internet system was down for the last 45 minutes or so.
Since we were last with you, Murali Vijay has gone past 100, and India have got a real wiggle on, adding 72 runs in the first hour of this last session.
We will be going right through til 6:30pm… we won’t make the 90 over mark though… there’s no way the Aussies will bowl 26 overs in 90 minutes.
To take you through the next half hour will be Ian Healy, Michael Slater and James Brayshaw!
6:30pm | STUMPS – DAY 1
India 4/311 (83) | Rohit Sharma 26* (34) | Ajinkya Rahane 75 (122)
Hello again from the GABBA, where firstly, we must apologise for the sudden halt in our coverage this afternoon, on the 1st day of the 2nd test between Australia and India, but we lost our internet connection for the entire final session of play, which prevented us from bringing you any coverage.
What we can tell you, is that it was India’s day in Brisbane, thanks most notably to Murali Vijay, who scored 144 off 213 balls., before he was dismissed by Nathan Lyon.
Vijay | c Haddin, b Lyon | 144 (213) | FOW 4/261 (71.5)
From there, another 11.1 overs were bowled, as Sharma and Rahane put on 50 runs, and steered their way through to stumps with consummate ease.
A solid day for India. Wickets were hard to come by for the Aussies, as their opposition managed to string together some useful partnerships right through the day.
A couple of issues for the Australian Bowlers, with both Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh spending time off the ground. We hope they’ll be back on-ground tomorrow, as Australia will rely on them to try and end this Indian onslaught as quickly as possible!
Play continues from 11am AEDST tomorrow morning, and we hope you’ll be with us then. From Brisbane, Goodnight!
