We’re at the business end of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup… After 42 matches, which took us to fourteen different venues across Australia and New Zealand, only seven matches remain to determine the best One Day International team in the land.

It’s been a thrilling tournament so far, and what we’ve got today, is a fantastic way to get the knockout stage underway, it’s South Africa against Sri Lanka, and it’s LIVE from the Sydney Cricket Ground!

So much Cricket still to come… the intensity has lifted, and we’ve got some blockbuster games coming your way over the next four days.

Welcome to our coverage of the Quarter-Finals in the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Over the next four days, we start here in Sydney, then head on to Melbourne, Adelaide and Wellington, for what will be four gripping quarter-finals, and as I said in the opener, this is a fantastic way to get us going, as it could go either way… the other three matches have a somewhat clear favourite, with most people predicting victories for India, Australia and New Zealand respectively, but this is the 50/50 match… both teams have their strengths and weaknesses, but look even on paper… so, it’s all going to depend on who makes the most of the Sydney conditions as far as I’m concerned.

Sri Lanka go through to this part of the tournament after finishing 3rd in Group A, behind the hosts, New Zealand and Australia. Their best performance so far… the thumping 9-wicket win over England at Westpac Stadium just 16 days ago, and since that time, no one has been able to stop Kumar Sangakkara, who comes here on the back of four consecutive centuries, the last against Scotland, and it was a marvellous piece of Cricket history, as he became the first player to achieve that feat in a World Cup… he’s on a roll, and is crucial to the success of the Sri Lankans here today.

As for South Africa, they still managed second in group, despite heavy losses to both India and Pakistan, but their NRR (Net Run Rate) was far better than Pakistan, and therefore, it’s a match-up against Sri Lanka today, rather than Australia on Friday.

A.B De Villiers has been the stand-out performer for the Proteas this summer, with that demoralising performance against the West Indies at this very ground, etched in the memories of all who saw it.

As far as the bowlers are concerned, it’s all about Dale Steyn and Lasith Malinga.

We’ve got the toss coming up at 2pm AEDST, with play to commence at 2:30pm… back in a moment!

2pm | TOSS
David Boon, the match referee and the two captains, A.B De Villiers and Angelo Mathews, are out in the middle of the Sydney Cricket Ground for the all important toss.
I can tell you that, Sri Lanka has won the toss, and they’ll bat first in the 1st Quarter-Final!

2:10pm | Let’s confirm the two teams for you.

2:30pm | Sri Lanka won the toss, elected to bat first
Sri Lanka 0/0 (0)
Tillakaratne Dilshan 0* (0) | Kusal Perera 0* (0)

We’re ready to go at the Sydney Cricket Ground… It’s the 1st Quarter-Final between South Africa and Sri Lanka… the news from here, is that Sri Lanka have won the toss, they’ll bat first… that seems to be an advantage, given what we’ve seen of the pitch, and what we’ve seen in the tournament thus far.

Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan will open the batting for Sri Lanka… Dale Steyn will use the new ball, and a very healthy crowd is in the SCG and PUMPED, as we go up to the commentary box, and say hi to Shane Warne, Russell Arnold and Mpumelelo Mbangwa!

2:37pm | GOT HIM!!!
A MAGNIFICENT CATCH FROM DE KOCK, AND ABBOTT HAS HIS FIRST WICKET… PERERA HAD BEEN SLASHING OUTSIDE OFF-STUMP ALL OVER, AND THIS TIME HE GETS THE EDGE, AND IS ON HIS WAY!

Perera | c de Kock, b Abbott | 3 (10) | FOW 1/3 (1.4)

Kumar Sangakkara is the new man in, and boy does he need to fire for Sri Lanka… they’ve lost one early, and South Africa have gained the early momentum!

2:50pm | GOT HIM!!! GOT HIM… THEY’VE GOT A SECOND WICKET, AND THERE ARE ONLY FOUR RUNS ON THE BOARD… SRI LANKA IN ALL SORTS OF TROUBLE AT THE SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND… STEYN GETS HIS FIRST… THIS IS BRILLIANT BOWLING FROM THE STRIKE BOWLERS FOR THE PROTEAS.

ABBOTT HAS ONE, NOW STEYN DOES TOO… IT’S 2/4!

Dilshan | c du Plessis, b Steyn | 0 (7) | FOW 2/4 (4.1)

Lahiru Thirimanne is the new man in!

3:05pm | It’s all South Africa so far at the Sydney Cricket Ground… 7 overs down, and Sri Lanka on the back foot, at 2/18.
To tell you more about it, Shaun Pollock, Rahul Dravid and Mark Nicholas!

3:38pm | Sri Lanka 2/47 (14) | This is a cracking quarter-final at the SCG… the South Africans are making life very difficult for the Sri Lankans.
2/47, and Kumar Sangakkara has faced 38 balls for just 5 runs.

Looking at the Head-to-Head though… fascinating how close it has been between the two teams over the years, they’ve played 59 times, South Arica have won 28, Sri Lanka 29, with a No Result game and a Tie as well.
To tell you more about it, Tom Moody, Michael Hussey and Harsha Bhogle.

3:41pm | Sri Lanka 2/50 (15) | DRINKS!

3:56pm | Sri Lanka 3/69 (19.1)
GOT HIM!!! SPIN DOES THE TRICK, AND IMRAN TAHIR GETS THE KEY WICKET FOR THE PROTEAS… AND HE’S OFF. HE’S CELEBRATING LIKE HE’S JUST WON THE CUP!

Thirimanne | c & b Imran Tahir | 41 (48) | FOW 3/69 (19.1)

Now, Mahela Jayawardene is out there, and this could be the last time that these two great players bat together… Sangakkara and Jayawardene, the experienced duo of Sri Lanka are together in the centre, so if you can, get to a TV ASAP!

4:10pm | Sri Lanka 4/81 (23.1)
GONE!!! GOOD CATCH… SECOND ONE FOR FAF TODAY, AND JAYAWARDENE HAS TO GO THIS TIME!
SECOND TIME LUCKY FOR SOUTH AFRICA, AND NOW THEY’RE RIGHT ON TOP AT THE SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND!

GONE… BIG WICKET FOR SOUTH AFRICA… THE SPINNERS ARE DOING THEIR JOB AT THE SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND!

Gee, Du Plessis has been everywhere today… 3 catches now, and surely, it’s a long road back for Sri Lanka, as we stop for drinks!

4:54pm | Sri Lanka 6/115 (33.4)

Kaushal | lbw, b Duminy | 0 (1) | FOW 8/116 (34.2)

Unbelievable scenes here… just absolute carnage over the last 15-20 minutes… 4 wickets in 9 balls, and the South Africans may well be booking their flights to Eden Park tonight!

5:12pm | RAIN | Sri Lanka 9/127 (36.2)

GOT HIM… THIRD MAN TAKES THE CATCH, AND SRI LANKA HAVE LOST THEIR LAST HOPE… BUT, AS I SAY THAT… THE RAIN HAS ARRIVED AT THE SCG, AND THE PLAYERS ARE HEADING FOR THE PAVILION!

Sangakkara | c Miller, b Morkel | 45 (96) | FOW 9/127 (36.2)

So, the rain has arrived, but the good news for South Africa is that the sun is already back out at the SCG, so we won’t be off for too long I suspect, HOWEVER, if the rain was to return, and we weren’t able to complete the game tonight, we’d be back here tomorrow, as all quarter-finals have a reserve day.

Play not too far away, as the rain cleared pretty quickly, and the covers have been taken off, so we’ll come back to the SCG in just a few moments!

Hello again from the Sydney Cricket Ground, where we’ve had quite an extraordinary afternoon so far, and one feels that there is plenty more drama to come.
Sri Lanka are 9/127… they were 2/4 in the early stages, and they lost 4/2 when Duminy and Tahir were dominating proceedings.
JP Duminy picked a hat-trick… Kumar Sangakkara has quite possibly played his last innings in ODI Cricket… and now, it’s up to Malinga and Chameera to try and post a few more runs onto, what is otherwise, a dismal total.

9/127, as we resume… Morkel is the bowler, and Russell Arnold is with Shane Warne and Mark Nicholas in the commentary box!

5:40pm | Sri Lanka 133 (37.2)
South Africa require 134 runs to win
‪#‎CWC15‬ | ‪#‎SLvSA‬ | ‪#‎ZakSportsAU‬ | ‪#‎Cricket‬

GONE… JOB OFFICIALLY DONE FOR SOUTH AFRICA.
IMRAN TAHIR TAKES FOUR, AND MALINGA IS THE LAST MAN DISMISSED!

Malinga | c Miller, b Imran Tahir | 3 (6) | FOW 10/133 (37.2)

Well, take a breath… that was horrendous for Sri Lanka… dismissed for 133.
Kumar Sangakkara’s streak of centuries has come to an end… JP Duminy takes South Africa’s first hat-trick in a World Cup, and now… after having bowled Sri Lanka out for a very small total on what we believe is a very good pitch, South Africa are just a stones throw away from a World Cup Semi-Final.

More from the Sydney Cricket Ground in just a moment!

South Africa | 0/0 (0)
Target: 134
Overs Remaining: 50
Wickets in Hand: 10
Required Run Rate: 2.68

5:50pm | Hello again from the Sydney Cricket Ground, and our coverage of the first World Cup quarter-final, between South Africa and Sri Lanka.

In the last half-hour, things have settled down a little bit, as we’ve had a rain delay, and now a 10-minute break for the change of innings, but before that… if you blinked, you missed something… it was very hard to keep up with. but that’s the beauty of the game of cricket, when a team gets on a roll, things happen very quickly.

South Africa were the team on song today… they’ve bowled Sri Lanka out for 133, and now need just 134 to book their tickets to the Semi-Final at Eden Park on Tuesday.

Now, the thing is this… South Africa have never won a World Cup knockout match… I think it’s fair to say that this is their best chance ever to break that drought.

Hashim Amla will face Lasith Malinga… Quinton de Kock is at the non-strikers end, and waiting for us in the commentary box are Michael Hussey, Shaun Pollock and Mpumelelo Mbangwa!

6:25pm | Sri Lanka 133 (37.2) | South Africa 1/40 (6.4) | Quinton de Kock 22* (18)
South Africa require 94 runs to win | Sri Lanka need 9 wickets

GONE!!! FINE CATCH IN THE DEEP, AND HASHIM AMLA IS OUT ON THE STROKE OF THE TEA INTERVAL!

Amla | c Kulasekara, b Malinga | 16 (23) | FOW 1/40 (6.4)

So, with that dismissal, TEA will be taken, and when play resumes, we believe it’ll be Faf du Plessis joining Quinton de Kock in the centre… but, at the moment, South Africa are making it look easy… 1/40, and they’re only 94 runs away from a semi-final!

See you back here at the SCG in around half an hour!

7pm | Sri Lanka 133 (37.2) | South Africa 1/40 (6.4) | Quinton de Kock 22* (18) | Faf du Plessis 0* (0)
South Africa require 94 runs to win | Sri Lanka need 9 wickets

Good evening from the Sydney Cricket Ground, where we’re ready for the evening session in this, the 1st quarter-final of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, between Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Hashim Amla was dismissed with the last ball before the tea interval, so Faf du Plessis has made his way to the middle, Quinton de Kock remains not out on 22, Lasith Malinga is the bowler, and waiting for us in the Commentary Box are Russell Arnold, Shane Warne and Mpumelelo Mbangwa!

7:35pm | Sri Lanka 133 (37.2) | South Africa 1/96 (13)
Quinton de Kock 50* (39) | Faf du Plessis 13* (19)
South Africa require 38 runs to win | Sri Lanka need 9 wickets

FIFTY for Quinton de Kock… He’s back in form… something that will delight him, and the rest of the Proteas, as well as their fans, but it’s causing heartache for Sri Lanka.

It’s 1/96!

HE’S HIT IT… THAT’S FOUR… GAME OVER… SOUTH AFRICA WIN!!!

The curse of knockout cricket is over for South Africa… they’ve won one at last, after 23 years of trying!

That’s the end of the road for Sri Lanka, and two of their best, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene have played their last limited-overs international, after very distinguished careers… it’s rather unfortunate that they’re not going out on a winning note, but they were outplayed today, in every aspect of the game!

All credit to South Africa… they were brilliant tonight, and have won with 32 overs to spare… and sent a huge warning to the remaining teams in this competition, most notably the West Indies and New Zealand, who face off in a quarter-final on Saturday… the winner of that game plays a Semi-Final against South Africa at Eden Park next Tuesday afternoon.

Quinton de Kock is back in form… 74 off 56 in that small run chase, and just at the right time as well.

Imran Tahir picked up 4/26 today, and that was enough for him to be presented with the Man of the Match award… although, there were a few candidates within that Proteas squad.

Sri Lanka will be disappointed, but they’ve made the knockout stage at the last four world cups, which is no mean feat, and they’ll look to regroup, and move forward without Jayawardene and Sangakkara, before planning their assault on the 2019 World Cup in England.

So, now we have seven teams left, and over the next three days, that will dwindle down to four, let’s have a look ahead for you.

Really looking forward to the match tomorrow, with India facing Bangladesh… a match that should be won by India, but given what we’ve seen in this world cup so far, I don’t think anyone has written the Tigers off just yet.

Well, we hope you’ve enjoyed the opening Quarter-Final… South Africa outplayed Sri Lanka in all aspects of the game… their batting, bowling and fielding was magnificent, and Sri Lanka’s downfall, surprisingly, was spin bowling, with Imran Tahir and JP Duminy stealing the show.

Duminy a hat-trick, and Tahir the Man of the Match, and now the Proteas are on their way to Eden Park, to face either the Windies or the Black Caps, and that elusive first World Cup Final is in sight… they’re one win away, and after what we’ve seen here, you wouldn’t be surprised if they are at the MCG Sunday week.

So, that’s then is that… South Africa, DOMINANT! They won it by 9 wickets, in front of over 27,000 people. From the Sydney Cricket Ground… goodnight!
