7:30pm | Australia’s batsmen all made starts yesterday, but only Chris Rogers was able to go on with it… he was dismissed for 95, but not before proving to the selectors that he was the right man for the job.

Today, Shane Watson will resume with Nathan Lyon. Brad Haddin is the next man in, and Starc and Johnson are very capable of putting runs on the board… they trail England by 166, and will be determined to erase the deficit.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the third day of the first test, between England and Australia.

Competitive game on our hands here… England probably just with their noses in front, but there’s still so much to unfold  over the next three days.

Here’s a look at where the Australian Innings stands:
Screen Shot 2015-07-10 at 3.47.15 am

Chris Rogers put himself in the record yesterday, claiming Rahul Dravid’s record for the most consecutive Test half-centuries… he scored 95… I’m not sure it’s a record he’d like to own… he’d be disappointed he couldn’t get to three figures, despite having the highest score in the Australian innings so far.

When he spoke to the Media yesterday, he said that, at this stage, he thinks England are on top in this match.

Moeen Ali was one of England’s best on Day 2. His 77 got them past 400, and has helped to put them in a good position at the close of Day 2.

Starc | c Root, b Anderson | 0 (6) | FOW 10/308 (84.4) at 12:13pm

Brilliant work from England… they’ll be delighted with their mornings work… and now, they’ll have 35 or so in which to start their 2nd innings!
Rogers, the best for Australia… Anderson the best of the bowlers, and now they’re in front of this contest… their batsmen have the task at hand of setting Australia a target, and the pressure will be on the Aussie bowlers, to ensure that the target is as small as possible.

We’re in for a great evening of Cricket. Stick with us!

9:25pm | England 430 (102.1) & 0/0 (0) – Leads by 122. | Australia 308 (84.4)

Adam Lyth and Alastair Cook are making their way to the centre… Lyth will take strike, and Mitchell Johnson is ready with the new ball… We’re ready to go in this second innings. England out in front of the contest right now, but let’s wait and see what transpires today, before we make our predictions of Australia’s chances of winning it from here.

Let’s go back to Mark Taylor and Mark Nicholas!

9:51pm | England 430 (102.1) & 1/17 (7) – Leads by 139 | Australia 308 (84.4)

So, England have made to lunch, not unscathed, but certainly in control of this Test Match. They lead by 143, and are 1/21 in the 2nd dig.

Make sure you tune into Wide World of Sports during the luncheon interval… a special tribute to Richie Benaud coming your way with Mark Nicholas and the team… that is a MUST WATCH!

It’s England’s day so far in Cardiff, and they’ll look to stay on top, when play resumes in half an hour!

10:40pm | England 430 (102.1) & 1/21 (9) – Leads by 143 | Australia 308 (84.4)

‪GOT HIM… GLOVED IT… HADDIN TAKES THE CATCH… HAZLEWOOD GETS HIS FIRST… BALLANCE MUST GO!

Ballance | c Haddin, b Hazlewood | 0 (7) | FOW 2/22 (10) at 1:45pm

How appropriate, that no sooner after the tribute to Richie Benaud, that the score, for the first time in this series, is 2/22!

11:28pm | England 430 (102.1) & 3/73 (19.4) – Leads by 195 | Australia 308 (84.4)

12:36am | England 430 (102.1) & 3/149 (35.1) – Leads by 271 | Australia 308 (84.4)
Ian Bell 53* (75) | Joe Root 31* (41)

FOUR… FIFTY FOR IAN BELL… JOE ROOT AND HE ARE MOTORING ALONG IN THIS SESSION, AND ENGLAND ARE RIGHT ON TOP IN CARDIFF… 3/149 JUST MINUTES OUT FROM TEA!

12:40am | THAT’S TEA ON THE THIRD DAY… IT’S BEEN A GOOD SESSION FOR ENGLAND… Despite losing two wickets, they put on 128 runs in that session, and extended the lead to 271!

Root and Bell look settled, which is worrying for Australia, who desperately needed to break that partnership before TEA, if they were to be any hope of restricting England to less than 200, and therefore be chasing anywhere between 300-320, as we believe anything more than that will be exceptionally difficult on a fourth innings pitch!

Final session gets underway at 1am, and we’ve got 37 overs to be bowled in the final session.

1am | Day 3 – Evening Session | England 430 (102.1) & 3/149 (36) – Leads by 271 | Australia 308 (84.4)

Ben Stokes 42* (58) | Moeen Ali 0* (0)

GONE… NOT REALLY SURE WHAT YOU’D CALL THAT FROM JOS BUTTLER… HE GLOVED A BOTCHED ATTEMPT AT A REVERSE SWEEP, AND IT’S POPPED UP INTO THE HANDS OF BRAD HADDIN! 6/236!

Stokes | b Starc | 42 (59) | FOW 7/240 (59.1) at 5:40pm

2:45am | England 430 (102.1) & 8/245 (60.4) – Leads by 367 | Australia 308 (84.4)
Mark Wood 0* (0) | Moeen Ali 5* (6)

GOT HIM… BRILLIANT CATCH FROM HAZLEWOOD… HAVEN’T WE SEEN SOME BLINDERS TODAY?

STUART BROAD WENT AFTER NATHAN LYON, AND CAME UP SHORT, AND THEREFORE MUST GO. 8/245!

3:30am | England 430 (102.1) & 289 (70.1) | Australia 308 (84.4)
Australia require 412 runs to win.
‪#‎Ashes‬ | ‪#‎Cricket‬ | ‪#‎ENGvAUS‬ | ‪#‎ZakSportsAU‬

BOWLED HIM… ALL OVER!!!
ENGLAND ARE ALL OUT FOR 289, AND THAT’S STUMPS ON THE THIRD DAY… SMART BOWLING FROM LYON. ANDERSON PLAYED ALL ROUND IT, AND IT CRASHED INTO HIS STUMPS.

Anderson | b Lyon | 1 (4) | FOW 10/289 (70.1)

This would normally be the part of the day where I would show you the full batting card, but due to some technical problems with the equipment we’ve been using to provide this coverage, we can’t do that today… and we do apologise for that.

Nathan Lyon was the best of the bowlers today for Australia… he claimed 4/75 in 20.1 overs, and was backed up by Johnson, Starc and Hazlewood, who all netted 2 wickets each.

As for England… a lot of small totals, but again Joe Root lead the charge with 60, but he shared top score with Ian Bell this time. They were the best of England’s batsmen.

Alastair Cook again went cheaply. Buttler and Balance failed to get among the runs… Adam Lyth made 37, which is an improvement on the first innings, and Mark Wood ensured that the tail wagged… he remained NOT OUT on 32 off just 26 balls… that cameo had the Barmy Army up and about in a big way.

15 wickets fell today… Australia lost 5/44 in the first session, and as we know, England were rolled for 289 in the last over of the day.

Australia won’t be happy with their batting this morning… Shane Watson, again OUT in the form of LBW.
Surely, he can’t have too many chances left up his sleeve… his form has been on a gradual slide for some time, and he’s again failed to do the job when his captain needed him to score valuable runs.

Brad Haddin showcased why Australia’s batsmen struggle against swing bowling, as he was undone by a Jimmy Anderson out-swinger!

All that said, this has been a match for the batsmen… 333 runs scored today, taking the 3-day total to 1027.

Australia, starting tomorrow, have 6 sessions to score 412 for victory in the first test… won’t be easy, but it’s doable if they play smartly.

So, that’s then is that… Australia have to re-write the record books if they’re to win this first test. Bradman’s ’48 Invincibles were the last Australian team to chase more than 400 to win an Ashes Test… On the plus side, they’ve got two days to do it… on the down side, we’re expecting rain on Sunday!

Three days down… England are favourites at the moment, BUT… a solid day for Australia tomorrow could sway the odds back in their favour, and that’s why we’ll all tune in, and why we love our Test Match and Ashes Cricket… because it’s unpredictable.

We know that Australia will bat, and England will bowl on Day 4, but we’re clueless as to what twists and turns await us in this gripping contest between bat and ball… you can’t write scripts like this… what’s going to happen, how this plays out, and the result is the great unknown.

It’s going to be compelling viewing to say the least. We hope you’ll join us from 7:30pm AEST tonight, for Day 4… make or break day for Australia.

Until then, a very good morning to you.
