2014 V8 Supercars Championship | Sydney NRMA 500 | Race 38

Sydney 500 logo

It was a diabolically wet end to Race 37 of the Championship at Sydney Olympic Park yesterday, but as we gear up for the final day of school for 2014, it’s dry at the moment, ahead of Race 38 at 3:40pm AEDST this afternoon.

It’s been a tremendous season of V8 Supercar racing… we’ve had absolutely everything you could possibly imagine, and for the teams and drivers, the end of this final hit out will signal the start of a well deserved break for Christmas.

Hello everyone. Zak Caban with you here in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, welcoming you to the final race of the 2014 V8 Supercar Championship season.

Well yesterday was interesting to say the least. Race 36 was dry, and Race 37 started exactly the same way, but what followed was rain like we’ve never seen before here at Olympic Park, to the point where the Race was stopped for 20-30 minutes, and resumed behind the Safety Car, which is exactly the way it ended.

Jamie Whincup won both races yesterday, making him the winningest driver at this venue, surpassing the only other multiple race winner, team-mate Craig Lowndes in the process.

Shane Van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin made up the podium in the rain-shortened affair.

No driver has clean-swept a Sydney weekend before, so Jamie Whincup is on the precipice of creating another piece of history here today.

He starts the day ten thousand dollars ($10,000) richer, after co-claiming the Armor All Pole Award for the most pole positions in 2014, despite not claiming a single pole position here in Sydney as yet… he’ll a chance to eradicate that in the Top-Ten Shootout later on this afternoon.

Heading into that, Shane Van Gisbergen is the fastest man, in a top ten again dominated by Commodores.

      Scott Pye.
This young man has had some great results this season, but they’ve been few and far between.
He’s one driver still fighting for a drive next season.
      Qualifying Time: 1:28.5048
He’s gone faster than Chaz, but slower than his qualifying time, a 1:29.0973

      Here comes Mark Winterbottom.

      Qualifying Time: 1:28.4309

He fails to improve, and slips to third in the order, with 4 cars to run.

David Reynolds out on to the circuit…
      Qualifying Time: 1:28.3980
GONE!!! David Reynolds has been pinged for jumping the curb at turns 2, 3 and 4… and will NOT post a time, and will start 10th in the final race of the year.

That means, that for the first time since 1986, Ford fail to score a pole position in the Championship!

      Jamie Whincup
      Qualifying Time: 128.3054
He also jumps the curbs at 2-4, and he’s time won’t count either…
WOW… If Scott McLaughlin can secure Pole position, and he only has to beat Tander and Van Gis now… he will share the $20K pole award with Jamie Whincup!

TANDER stays 2nd for the moment… was fastest in the first two sectors, but marginally slower in the run home.
McLaughlin stays top, as Tander posts a 1:28.3458.

Lap 5/74 | Van Gisbergen leads in Sydney… made the move on McLaughlin and Tander on laps 2 and 3 respectively, after a poor start saw him slip to 3rd. Tander 2nd, Scotty sits in 3rd from Rick Kelly and Jamie Whincup, as the first cars enter pit-lane!

All driver bar Van Gis, Moffat, Dahlgren, Wall, Lowndes and Perkins pitted on either Lap 5 or 6, with those mentioned pitting on Lap 7, and Van Gis retains the lead. The entire field is on slicks, and Tander stays 2nd from Courtney, Mostert and Whincup!

Lap 40/74 | Safety Car #1 for the afternoon due to more torrential rain in Sydney… The 2nd round of pit-stops have just concluded, and Garth Tander has run of the circuit just before the SC deployment… he’s lost the lead as a result, and this is how the order stands:

      1st Shane Van Gisbergen
      2nd Garth Tander
      3rd James Courtney
      4th Jamie Whincup
      5th Chaz Mostert
