At the recent SuperCheap Auto Bathurst 1000, our Zak Caban had the privilege of sitting down for an extended chat with Legendary Australian Motorsport Commentator, Will Hagon (pictured above, with Zak), as part of 2MCE Sport’s coverage of the event.
Hagon, who called the Great Race for the Seven Network on eleven occasions, from 1965 to 1975, has been reporting and commentating on Motorsport for over fifty years, and has been attending events at Mount Panorama since 1959.
A voice synonymous with Australian Motorsport, Hagon has covered just about everything from the 500cc World Motorcycle Championship for SBS, the Australian Touring Car Championship for the ABC, a broadcaster whom he’s worked for since 1977, the Bathurst 12 Hour for Network TEN (1991-1994), as well as all major events to be held on Australian soil (Formula 1, World SBK, IndyCar, Speedway and more) – he even called the first edition of Cessnock’s, now annual, Australian Postie Bike Grand Prix.
In this extended, exclusive chat, Will speaks about where his love for Motorsport and broadcasting started, working in the United Kingdom, the challenges of covering the great race in an era with limited cameras, technology and manual lap scoring, how he landed at the ABC, colleagues and drivers that have stood out during his career, his love of two-wheel racing, road and speedway, plus the current crop of Supercars talent, and a whole lot more.
This is one for ALL Motor Racing enthusiasts!
